Shuzenji Temple Garden in Shuzenji, Izu City, is a special garden known as the Hojo Garden, which is not usually open to the public. Also known as “Tokai Daiichien,” it opens to visitors for a limited time during the late autumn foliage season.

This strolling garden was created in 1905, making use of the natural landscape of the surrounding hillside when the villa of Prince Komatsu Akihito was relocated here. Its pond, waterfall, and vibrant autumn leaves blend harmoniously with the historic buildings, creating a beautiful and tranquil atmosphere.

In 1907, Emperor Taisho, then Crown Prince, is said to have visited the garden and praised it as “the finest garden in the Tokai region.” It is believed that this praise gave rise to the name “Tokai Daiichien,” meaning “The Finest Garden in Tokai.”
