Shuzenji Okunoin Temple is located in the Yubune village, about 5km west of Shuzenji Onsen town. This tranquil place is also known as the place where Kobo Daishi trained at the age of 18. It is difficult to get to as it is not accessible by public transport, but it is a wonderful temple.

Silence pervades the grounds, and the natural scenery of the moss-covered rocks, colorful carp swimming in a small pond, and sunlight filtering through the trees will calm your mind and soul. Climbing up some steep stone steps will take you to a stone cave called the Kago no Ikura. Long ago, demons were rampant in this area, bothering the locals and hindering their training, so Kobo Daishi wrote the "Majibon" section of the Daihannya Sutra looking to the sky and sealed them away in a rock. The clear waters of Aun Falls flowing over the rock create a pleasant sound.

Events are sometimes held in the goma hall on the temple grounds. It is also open every morning for zazen meditation, and is a popular place for locals to visit. As it is a place for training, when you visit, you will feel a mysterious sensation, as if you have been purified or exorcised.
