伊豆市湯ヶ島 浄蓮の滝

Selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, Joren Falls is a renowned natural landmark of the Izu Peninsula, located upstream along the Kano River. The waterfall plunges straight down with powerful force, creating a striking contrast with the crystal-clear, cobalt-blue plunge pool below. This dramatic scenery captivates visitors the moment they arrive. Even in midsummer, the air around the falls remains refreshingly cool, and depending on the wind, you may feel the fine mist on your skin—an immersive way to experience the breath of nature.

Joren Falls is believed to have formed approximately 17,000 years ago. The surrounding rock walls reveal impressive columnar joints, created as lava cooled and solidified over time. Due to its high geological value, the area has been designated as a geosite, making it a place where visitors can also learn about the natural formation of the land. The site is home to the rare fern Joren-shida, which grows naturally only in Izu and southern Kyushu, and the rich local ecosystem continues to be carefully preserved.

The abundant, pure water of the river supports both mountain stream fishing and traditional wasabi cultivation. Along the riverbanks, visitors can observe picturesque wasabi fields, a distinctive feature of the area. Nearby shops offer a variety of wasabi-based products, making it enjoyable to stop by during a leisurely stroll.

Please note that the path from the parking area or bus stop to the waterfall basin includes some steep stairs. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and taking your time will allow you to fully enjoy the surrounding nature. Experience firsthand the awe-inspiring landscape shaped by Izu’s land and water at Joren Falls.
