桂大師 修善寺の桂

Katsura Daishi, or the Shuzenji Katsura, is a hidden sacred spot tucked deep in the mountains beyond the Okunoin of Shuzenji Temple. Legend says that in the early Heian period, Kobo Daishi planted a cassia staff he brought from Tang China here, which grew into the massive tree standing today. The tree is now designated a Natural Monument of Shizuoka Prefecture, and a stone statue of Kobo Daishi rests quietly at its base.

To reach the site, visitors begin from a small clearing known as the Katsura Daishi Parking Area. The trail has few signs, and the path passes through dim forest, fallen trees, large rocks, and small streams. A light hike is required, and sturdy footwear such as trekking shoes is recommended for safety.

The giant katsura tree, reaching approximately 30 meters, commands attention even from a distance. Looking up from its base, visitors are struck by its overwhelming presence. Surrounded by deep forest, the only sounds are wind, water, and birds. Many find their mind calming and their breathing deepening naturally in this serene environment.

Take a moment to sit on a rock and feel the power of nature and faith alive in this secluded mountain sanctuary. Katsura Daishi is a place for those seeking peace, reflection, and a connection to the sacred.
