伊豆市修善寺温泉 指月殿

Shigetsuden is a small chapel quietly situated at the foot of Mt. Shikayama, across the Katsura River from Shuzenji Temple. In 1203, Minamoto no Yoriie, the second shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, was imprisoned at Shuzenji by the Hojo clan and met a tragic death the following year. It is said that Hojo Masako, Yoriie’s mother, established Shigetsuden to pray for her son’s repose. The chapel is also recognized as the oldest existing wooden structure in Izu, making it an extremely valuable historical site.

Located slightly away from the bustling hot spring town, the chapel is sparsely visited. Its simple and dignified appearance quietly draws visitors’ attention, conveying a sense of calm and solemnity. The atmosphere seems to carry the prayers and deep sorrow of a mother across the centuries.

At the center of the chapel sits a Seated Shaka Nyorai statue, designated as a Cultural Property of Shizuoka Prefecture. Unlike typical Shaka statues, this one holds a lotus flower in its right hand, making it a rare example in Japan. Its serene expression gently envelops the hearts of those who view it.

Adjacent to Shigetsuden is Genji Park, where the grave of Minamoto no Yoriie rests quietly. Visitors are encouraged to explore both sites, reflecting on the history of Shuzenji and the heartfelt prayers of a mother.
