Georia (Izu Peninsula Geopark Museum)

How were the Izu Peninsula and the Tanzawa Mountains formed, beginning in the age of the supercontinent Pangaea?
Georia is an engaging museum where visitors can explore the geological origins of Izu from a scientific perspective. Located in the basement of the Shuzenji Community Center at the entrance to Shuzenji Onsen, admission is free, making it easy to stop by during your visit.

Inside the museum, clear and informative exhibits trace the long and dramatic history of how the Izu Peninsula took its present shape. Friendly staff members offer detailed explanations, so no prior knowledge is required. With video displays and hands-on experiment corners, the museum is enjoyable for visitors of all ages. Exhibits created by local junior high school students also add a warm, community-focused touch.

The museum occupies a single floor, and a full visit takes about 60 minutes. It is an ideal place to drop in between sightseeing spots in Shuzenji.
Discover the deep and slightly mysterious story of the Izu Peninsula—and gain a deeper appreciation for Izu as a travel destination.
