Hie Shrine

Located in Shuzenji Onsen, Hie Shrine has long been a place of worship, historically serving to protect the kimon (northeast direction) of the adjacent Shuzenji Temple. Originally known as Sanno-sha of Shuzenji, the shrine is said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi and carries a deep historical significance. The grounds are always enveloped in tranquility, creating a calm atmosphere even during the day.
The first sight that greets visitors is the magnificent Japanese evergreen oak, designated as a Natural Monument of Shizuoka Prefecture. Standing approximately 25 meters tall, the tree exudes a powerful presence, having watched over this place for centuries.

Hie Shrine is also famous as a place to pray for children and fertility. Its “Married Cedars,” said to be over 800 years old, are a popular spot. The two trees, joined at the base, symbolize marital harmony and good relationships, attracting many visitors seeking blessings. At night, the shrine is softly illuminated, and the towering trees emerging from the darkness convey both sacredness and quiet strength.

In this solemn setting, visitors can feel the natural energy that surrounds the shrine. Every October, the shrine’s annual festival brings life to Shuzenji Onsen, with mikoshi (portable shrines) and shagiri festival floats parading through the town. Combine a visit to Hie Shrine with Shuzenji’s seasonal events for a truly immersive cultural experience.
