Nirayama Hansharo

Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces were built in the late Edo period for casting cannons, marking an important step in Japan’s modernization. Only three reverberatory furnaces remain in Japan today, and Nirayama is the only one preserved in near-complete condition with confirmed historical operation. In 2015, it was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site as part of the Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.

The adjacent Guidance Center offers clear and engaging explanations of why the furnaces were built, the historical background of the era, and the industrial systems of the time. Volunteer guides are available on site, providing informative commentary that helps visitors gain a deeper understanding of the history.

Inside the center, related artifacts are on display, and a large-screen video introduces key figures involved in the construction, the historical context, and the cannon-casting process in an easy-to-follow format. The exhibits are accessible and enjoyable for visitors of all ages, even without prior historical knowledge.

Surrounded by greenery and gentle streams, the area around the furnaces and guidance center offers a peaceful atmosphere for walking and reflection. It is a place where history, learning, and relaxation come together—an ideal stop for those interested in Japan’s industrial heritage.
