Kinomiya Shrine

The "Kinomiya Shrine" (木宮神社), located in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a historic shrine with a history of over 1,300 years. As one of Atami's major tourist attractions, it is popular among both domestic and international visitors.

Kinomiya Shrine is known for its blessings of "matchmaking," "health and longevity," and "abstinence from alcohol and smoking." It is also considered a powerful spiritual spot, especially recommended for those seeking success in their careers or competitive endeavors. The main shrine enshrines three deities: Ōnamuchi-no-Mikoto (大巳貴命), Yamato Takeru-no-Mikoto (日本武尊), and Itakeru-no-Mikoto (五十猛命).

Within the shrine grounds stands a sacred camphor tree (Ōkusu) that is over 2,000 years old and designated as a National Natural Monument. It is considered one of Japan’s most powerful spiritual spots. Legend has it that walking around the trunk once will extend one's lifespan by a year, attracting many visitors who slowly circle the tree while making wishes. Despite being a traditional shrine, Kinomiya Shrine features a refined and modern design throughout its grounds, with beautiful nighttime illuminations enhancing its serene atmosphere. Additionally, the shrine’s café, "Saryō Hōko," offers delightful local specialties such as matcha sweets from Shizuoka and the shrine’s original "Mugikogashi Soft Cream (麦こがしソフトクリーム)"—perfect for a refreshing break after your visit.

Kinomiya Shrine is one of Atami’s most iconic tourist spots, where history, nature, and stunning scenery come together in perfect harmony. The sacred Great Camphor Tree is a must-see, making it an ideal destination for those seeking to enhance their good fortune. If you visit Atami, why not take a moment to cleanse your spirit at Kinomiya Shrine?
