【Namesawa Gorge (Tarosugi)】 Amagi｜Hiking・Nature

Namezawa Valley is a valley surrounded by deep forests on the north side of Amagi Pass, a tributary of the Kano River. For a long time, rapids have flowed between the rocks, smoothing the rock surface and giving it its name. The stream flows in a variety of forms, from a thin white thread to a waterfall flowing into a deep pool. Many locals enjoy the fresh greenery of early summer and the autumn leaves.

There is a hiking trail along the river, so you can enjoy a stroll. The water is very cold, so many families come to play in the river in the summer. Ryusugata Falls is located where the Namezawa River joins the source of the Kano River, and the small pool at the bottom is a beautiful cobalt blue.

If you follow the hiking trail along the mountain stream from Ryusugata Falls, you will suddenly come into view of Taro Cedar, a natural monument. Over 450 years old, Taro Cedar is on a completely different scale to the surrounding cedars, overwhelming those who see it. There is a fence protecting the base so you cannot touch it, but you can get close and feel its energy up close. We hope you will feel the power of the largest tree in Mt. Amagi.
