Hashiriyu Hot Spring (走り湯)

250103140114324

Hashiriyu (走り湯), located at the foot of Izusan in Atami city, is said to have been discovered approximately 1,300 years ago. The name "Hashiriyu" is believed to come from the way the hot spring water gushes out from the mountains and flows down toward the coast as if its running or flying. It is a rare horizontal spring source in Japan and is considered one of the three oldest hot springs in the country.

Visitors are free to explore the cave. As you approach, you will notice thick steam rising and feel the intense heat. The cave is about 5 to 6 meters deep, with a low ceiling and a narrow structure. At the very back, you can witness hot spring water gushing out at approximately 70°C (158°F), at a rate of 140 liters per minute, making a loud bubbling sound. However, due to the poor visibility and sauna-like conditions inside, visitors should be cautious of their footing and monitor their physical condition.

A staircase near Hashiriyu leads up to Izusan Shrine’s main hall, with 837 steps to climb. Along the way, visitors will also find Soto Shrine (走湯神社), which protects the source of Hashiriyu. It is highly recommended to visit both shrines while exploring the area.
