The Summer Begins with
a Tub Ride in Ito!
In the heart of the Ito Onsen district, where hot springs flow and nostalgia lingers in the air, there’s a summer event unlike any other. TheMatsu River Tub Boat Race (Matsukawa Tarai-nori Kyoso). This one-of-a-kind event invites participants to climb into giant wooden tubs—about a meter in diameter—and paddle down the Matsu River using rice-paddle-shaped oars. The result is a thrilling, hilarious, and at times chaotic race that embodies the playful spirit of Ito.
A one-of-a-kind festival where history meets hilarity, it captures the heart of the community—and the imagination of all who watch.
"Born from Hospitality and Humor"
The race began in 1956 as a way to entertain visitors to Ito Onsen. Over the decades, it has grown into a beloved annual tradition that draws locals and tourists alike. The setting—the scenic Matsu River, which flows gently through the heart of the onsen town—is perfect for both viewing and racing.
You might be surprised to hear that a race takes place on the Matsukawa River—using bathtubs! But behind this quirky event lies Ito’s signature sense of playfulness and heartfelt hospitality.
It all began when the local ryokan association came up with the idea to offer tourists something fun and memorable. Since then, the tradition has been passed down through the community, and today it has become a major summer event attracting attention from across Japan.
"Is Riding a Tub Down a River Harder Than It Looks?"
When you hear "racing down a river in a washtub," you might picture a lighthearted, easy-going event. But don’t be fooled—this race is no walk in the park. The course stretches about 400 meters, from Ideyu Bridge to Fujinokawa Park, right through the center of Ito. At first glance, the river’s gentle flow seems easy enough to handle. But once you’re in the tub, it’s a different story: they spin in circles, tip unexpectedly, and keeping your balance becomes a battle in itself! There are several race categories to enjoy, including group races with friends, an international division for participants from abroad, and a children’s race full of energy and laughter.
As each tub sets off, the riverside is filled with cheers, shouts, and joyful chaos. With such a lively atmosphere, the entire town of Ito transforms into a summer festival, where the sound of laughter echoes between the hot spring inns.
"Please Note: Water Levels Will Be Higher on Race Day"
On the day of the event, the water level of the Matsukawa River will be higher than usual due to a controlled water release from the Okuno Dam. For your safety, please be mindful of where you stand along the riverbank while spectating.
We especially recommend that families with small children view the race from a safe, elevated area. Your cooperation helps ensure everyone can enjoy the event safely.
"It's Fun to Watch — But You Might End Up Wanting to Try It Yourself"
Many visitors to Ito stumble upon the Tub Boat Race by chance. At first, they stop out of curiosity—“What is this?” they laugh. But as the event unfolds, they find themselves cheering alongside the crowd. And by the end? They’re already thinking: “Maybe next year, I’ll give it a try.”
Now celebrating its 70th anniversary, the Matsukawa Tub Boat Race is more than just a quirky tradition—it’s a proud symbol of Ito Onsen’s joyful spirit, lovingly upheld by the local community. Whether you're visiting for the first time or rediscovering your hometown, come spend a laughter-filled summer day by the banks of the Matsukawa River. Who knows—you just might find yourself on the starting line next year.
