桂大師 修善寺の桂

Katsura Daishi (Katsura of Shuzenji) is located further into the mountains than the inner sanctuary of Shuzenji Temple. It is said that when Kobo Daishi stuck a katsura stick he brought back from China in the early Heian period into the ground, a katsura tree sprouted. It is a prefecturally designated natural monument, and a stone Buddha of Kobo Daishi is enshrined at the base of the tree.

Enter the mountain path from the open space called Katsura Daishi Parking Lot. There are almost no signs, so you can walk along the faint mountain path with some trepidation. You can finally reach the top after climbing over fallen trees and large rocks. You will also have to cross a small stream, so trekking shoes are recommended.

This giant tree, about 30m tall, stands out even from afar, and is very impressive when you look up at it from the base. It is quite secluded, and perhaps because you can only hear the sounds of nature, it is strangely calming. Sit on the surrounding rocks and relax to feel the power of nature.
