A seasonal tradition that colors the rainy season in Izu

In June each year, the Hydrangea Festival is held at Shimoda Park, located in the southern part of the Izu Peninsula in Shimoda City.
This beloved annual event has long been cherished by locals and visitors alike as a seasonal tradition that marks the arrival of early summer in Shimoda during the rainy season. Shimoda Park is a nature-rich area situated on a small hill, with walking paths that wind through gentle slopes. From the park’s scenic viewpoints, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Shimoda Bay and the surrounding port town below.

Around 150,000 hydrangea plants blanket the hillsides of Shimoda Park, with an estimated over 3 million blossoms in total, making it one of the largest hydrangea displays in the entire Izu region. When June arrives, the entire park is enveloped in the soft fragrance and vibrant colors of hydrangeas. Whether under clear skies or gentle rain, the scenery becomes a dreamy, almost otherworldly landscape.

Within the park, a wide variety of hydrangea species have been planted, painting the slopes with vibrant shades of blue, purple, pink, and white. Especially on rainy days, the flowers take on a fresh, glistening appearance, exuding a quiet, serene beauty.
The walking trails throughout the park are well-maintained, offering visitors a leisurely way to enjoy the natural surroundings. Along the way, there are plenty of viewing spots and benches, making it easy to pause, take in the scenery, and enjoy a peaceful moment in nature.

The tranquil mountain slopes covered in blooming hydrangeas, combined with the laid-back atmosphere of the coastal town of Shimoda, create a uniquely peaceful and relaxing experience.
At Shimoda Park, you'll find a special kind of experience—one where you're surrounded by nature and gently reminded that time can flow differently. If you're visiting the Izu Peninsula, we highly recommend taking the time to explore this peaceful and beautiful spot.
