A Summer Dream in Purple:

As you stroll along Atami’s coastline in early summer, a breathtaking sight may stop you in your tracks—
rows of purple-blossomed jacaranda trees swaying in the sea breeze.

This is the Atami Jacaranda Festival, held every June in Shizuoka’s scenic seaside hot spring town. Known as the only coastal jacaranda promenade in Japan, this event has become a seasonal highlight and a must-visit photo spot for travelers and locals alike.

What is Jacaranda?

Native to South America and parts of Africa, jacarandas are tropical flowering trees celebrated for their delicate purple-blue blooms.
Sometimes called “purple cherry blossoms”, their magical, cloud-like flowers bloom from late May through June.

Though jacarandas rarely grow well in Japan, Atami’s mild climate has made this miracle possible. Since the 1990s, trees have been planted along the coastline, and today, they bloom in dazzling numbers—over 100 trees along the “Jacaranda Promenade.”

Highlights of the Festival

・Night Illumination
After sunset, the trees are beautifully lit, transforming the promenade into a romantic twilight walk. A favorite for couples and photographers alike.
・Jacaranda Market (Weekends)
Local vendors offer flower-themed sweets, Atami specialties, and handmade goods. A fun way to taste and take home a bit of Atami’s charm.
・Photo Spots & Contests
Decorated arches, signs, and seasonal displays make it easy to snap the perfect photo. Don't forget to join the social media photo contest!

With its rare, vivid blossoms and spectacular coastal setting,
the Atami Jacaranda Festival offers a one-of-a-kind fusion of flowers, ocean views, and traditional hot spring hospitality.
Come see Japan’s only seaside jacaranda promenade—and create memories that bloom long after summer ends.
