Hie Shrine

Hie Shrine, located at the kimon (demon gate) which is adjacent from Shuzenji Temple. Originally the temple’s Sanno Shrine and is said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi. The shrine grounds exude a serene atmosphere, offering tranquility even during the daytime. Within the precincts stands a magnificent Japanese oak tree, designated as a Natural Monument by Shizuoka Prefecture. Towering at approximately 25 meters, its majestic presence is truly awe-inspiring.

Hie Shrine is also renowned as a place for prayers related to fertility and children. One of its most popular attractions is the Meoto-sugi (Married Couple Cedar), a pair of cedars over 800 years old whose roots are fused into one. At night, the cedar trees are illuminated, creating a sacred and awe-inspiring atmosphere. The massive silhouette of the ancient trees seems to radiate an immense and mysterious energy, making it a must-visit spot.

It is a shrine where visitors can savor a solemn atmosphere while feeling the energy of the surrounding trees. In October, the annual festival is held, featuring mikoshi (portable shrines) and shagiri floats parading through the Shuzenji Onsen area. Be sure to enjoy this vibrant event as well.
