A seasonal tradition that colors the rainy season in Izu

In June each year, the Hydrangea Festival is held at Shimoda Park, located in the southern part of the Izu Peninsula in Shimoda City.
This beloved annual event has long been cherished by locals and visitors alike as a seasonal tradition that marks the arrival of early summer in Shimoda during the rainy season. Shimoda Park is a nature-rich area situated on a small hill, with walking paths that wind through gentle slopes. Around 150,000 hydrangea plants blanket the hillsides of Shimoda Park, with an estimated over 3 million blossoms in total, making it one of the largest hydrangea displays in the entire Izu region. When June arrives, the entire park is enveloped in the soft fragrance and vibrant colors of hydrangeas. Whether under clear skies or gentle rain, the scenery becomes a dreamy, almost otherworldly landscape.
